Progress!
Today we got on with some filming and made lots of progress! We've filmed it in an indoor light filter that has created this beautiful bluey, dreamy, abstracy effect! Its added a great effect to our theme so it looks more abstract. Its going well so far but we still have a lot to do! We'll be carrying on filming for another week or so!

What we've done.
We successfully filmed a small fraction of our music video. The key dancing scenes with Jade in. We had 3 takes and got a perfect shot. However, one of the cameras became really distorted so we've had to use our back up camera. We attempted to edit but sadly it wouldn't allow us. We plan to do more filming this week.
Also, I took some snapshots for our digipaks involving Jade. Some of them are really good so I'll hopefully be using some of them!

We are filming today!
Unfortunately, we don't have Sarah with us so we cannot film as much as we'd like too. She has our camera & costume so we'll only be filming parts with only Jade in today. Sarah & I have managed to film the first 14 seconds of the video off schedule. Jade has brought in her costume today so its all good!

Props!
Our props had finally arrived! So we can properly start filming next Monday! Sadly we cannot film today as our schedule said as the weather isn't good today, plus our dancer is absent. So we'll attempt to do some editing of our current footage.
The actors will be asked to put on a mask and to create the extra abstract theme. We'd thought we'd go with people dressed as animals to make effect on the dream aspect to our video.
With this idea we got the concept that it goes well with our target audience, being strange and different. We thought they'd like the idea of people dressed up as animals more then actual animals.

Costume.
This is Jade's outfit for the Ballerina Girl. Black representing death.
Outfit for my character. Its all innocent and sweet for the character. Its quite an indie dress so our target audience may like it.

Narrative Theory.
Propp.
Vladimir Propp was a Soviet formalist scholar who suggested that characters from fairy tales and folk stories took on roles that pulled off certain functions and elements.
The Characters and roles they take:
The Hero – a character that seeks something
The Villain – who opposes or actively blocks the hero’s quest
The Donor – who provides an object with magical properties
The Dispatcher – who sends the hero on his/her quest via a message
The False Hero – who disrupts the hero’s success by making false claims
The Helper – who aids the her
The Princess – acts as the reward for the hero and the object of the villain’s plot
Her Father – who acts to reward the hero for his effort
Is this relevant?
Though this theory suites some videos, I don't think it suites ours. We haven't got enough characters or a complicated enough narrative for us to split this up and distinguish what goes where. We won't be using this theory in our work. Its more for films and television then music videos.
Strauss.
Levi Strauss looked at a narrative structure in terms of Binary opposition. These are opposite values which reveal structures of media texts. Subconsciously the audience are aware of who should win etc You can identify these in any form of media and here's an example of some binary opposites:
Good VS Evil
Rich VS Poor
Love VS Hate
Humans & Aliens
Earth & Space
Past and Future
Is it relevant?
In our music video we display forms of binary opposition. With the two main female characters, one is dressed in white and the other in black, to represent life and death. This theory is very relevant and we should make the elements clear within.
Barthes
Roland Barthes was a French Literary theorist who discovered 5 different codes in which a narrative story captures the attention of the audience.
The Enigma Code - The audience is intrigued and feels they needing to solve a problem.
The Action Code - The audience get excited by the need to solve the problem.
The Semantic Code - The audience is directed to an additional meaning by the use of connotation.
The symbolic Code - The audience forms their expectations based on the generic conventions e.g. Black = Evil
The Cultural Code - The audience deserves meaning from the shared cultural knowledge about the way the world works.
Is this relevant?
As our music video has alot of entropic elements its hard to apply this theory. However, there are some elements in which the audience are intrigued by the narrative and want to find out what happened to the ballerina. Also they assume that she is evil because she's dressed in black . So the symbolic and enigma code prove relevant to our video.
Todorov.
Tzvetan Todorov was a philosopher who claims that there are 5 stages in a media text:
Original Equilibrium
|
|
|
Disruption
|
|
|
Recognition (of the disruption)
|
|
|
Attempt to restore equilibrium
|
|
|
New Equilibrium
Is this relevant?
We don't have a very linear storyline and nothing chronological happens. So none of these stages really work at all. This is the least relevant theory out of them all.
